I survived my surgery and now I have returned home! I probably should have updated sooner, but honestly, the past week and a half flew by. A lot of it blurred past – a mix of pain meds (some of which I’m still on) and pain and walking and just surviving minute to minute – so I didn’t have time to do any updating. But now I’ll update on surgery and the update on my path report will come soon. Surgery Day The day before surgery, we went to Cleveland and did a bunch of pre-op testing, met with anesthesiology and one of Dr. Raymond’sRead More →

30 Things to Do While I’m 30

Some people do a “30 things to do before I turn 30” list, well, I’m a little late for that since I’ll be 30 in a month.  When I was 15, I did make a goal to visit all of the continents before I was 30.  I made it to 5 out of the 7 before my chronic illnesses prevented me from international travel.  While I still dream of visiting the final two (Antartica and Africa), it won’t be anytime soon.  Instead, I decided to make a list of 30 things to do while I’m 30. 1. Make a website about cavy genetics. ✓ 2. Hang portraits of my petsRead More →

Meet Dr. Huey

Remember when I first bought my house, I was super excited about the rose bush, but didn’t know what variety it was?  I’ve finally solved the mystery, and indeed it is interesting.  I’ve been reading more about roses recently, primarily to learn about when and how to prune them, since by the fall last year it’s long rambling canes and sharp thorns were growing over both my outside spigot and my gas meter. In the process of learning about pruning and how to train it to a trellis, I also learned it’s variety.  He is ‘Dr. Huey,’ which is commonly used throughout the United States, andRead More →

Growing Up in the Garden

I grew up in the garden – literally!  When I was young, I had a section of the garden that was mine at my grandma’s house.  I mostly made mud pies, but also pretended to hoe and “plant” whatever I found.  When I got older, I joined 4-H and had my first garden of my very own, a small flower bed around our flag pole.  I continued to take gardening projects, including house plants, various flower garden projects, and even a tree/landscaping project. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that I first planted vegetables.  I started with peas and potatoes, and have addedRead More →

Gardening Boxes

My dad brought out some old boards from the deck they had on their house and set them up as gardening boxes for me. Now I just need to fill them, I’m going to use the lasagna gardening method, which alternates layers of green and brown materials on top of newspaper.  My first layer of newspaper went down, covered by a layer of the stuff out of my cavy cages – broken down wood pellets, poop/pee, and discarded hay. I’m going to continue this until I have a layer over the whole box, then go back and add some chopped leaves and other green material,Read More →
